Common Spaces for Learning

To house a learning academy for tech scholars from around the world, AP+I Design had to convert a 1980s building into a functional and comfortable space. The building’s antiquated infrastructure had to be updated to support high-tech user requirements, and needed to meet strict green building guidelines and new Title 24 energy criteria.

The existing building atrium and skylights had an industrial feel that appealed to the design team and client alike. Inspired by New York’s High Line Park, the feeling of a communal outdoor promenade was created through building “facades”, elevated seating, grassy areas, plantings and a large canteen-style dining space. Diverse communal spaces provide break out spaces between learning sessions for scholars to socialize and rest. A variety of light fixtures and light levels provide visual interest, space definition and energy conservation. The diversity of spaces gives users plenty of choices according to their mood and type of activity.
