Founded in 2014 and growing quickly, Apstra set out to design and construct their new headquarters in Menlo Park. Their new space had to accommodate additional employees and also reflect their authentic style of ‘industrial/old-world meets technology’. The project objective was to showcase Apstra to clients in a design-savvy manner while creating a workplace that reflected the unique employee culture.

Apstra decided flexibility was most important, so initial program elements were reduced to allow for more spacious workspace and collaboration areas. Interpreting the unique style of the client, AP+I created an integrated design solution with an eclectic palette of materials such as oriental rug-inspired carpeting, corrugated metal siding and rich walnut veneers. The quality and authenticity of materials was important to Apstra, so the design team found cost saving measures used in less conspicuous areas of the space. Furniture was specified in lieu of custom millwork for back of house areas, letting raw materials such as the corrugated metal remain unfinished. While most of the ceiling was opened and layered with acoustic material, the dynamic design element of the slatted felt ceiling provided a creative space definition.
