Designing for the Whole Person

NortonLifeLock* sought to create an environment that embodied the company’s global brand, mission and workplace culture. They wanted the space to project the strength and security their brand promises its customers while giving employees the excitement and pride they expect from their place of work. The design team’s challenge was to find the balance between the seriousness of NortonLifeLock’s business with the collaboration and camaraderie it wanted to foster in its workforce.

The existing workspace did not encourage NortonLifeLock values, nor was it engaging for everyday users. The redesigned space places emphasis on fostering interactions and collaboration between employees and creating connections between teams on a global scale. The design team created a series of flexible spaces for work in. Inviting break rooms and varied seating arrangements encourage impromptu meetings and conversation. The aesthetics had to be modern and sophisticated, but have moments of quirkiness and humor. Natural materials are emphasized and accented with strong pops of color and bold branding elements. Unexpected touches in the lighting, furniture and accessories provide moments of curiosity and delight.

Sustainability was another major component of the project, which had to be designed to both LEED and WELL Building standards. Focus on employee health and wellbeing was central to the design effort and considered in every design decision. Employees are encouraged to experience movement throughout the space; increasing their overall health while simultaneously encouraging casual connections. The result is an exciting conglomeration of parts that express this focus on human and environmental sustainability.

In 2017, the NortonLifeLock headquarters achieved Silver WELL Certification through Delos, among the first buildings in Northern California to do so. In meeting the company’s objectives for employee engagement and overall wellbeing, the overall environment at NortonLifeLock headquarters is timeless, exciting, energizing and comfortable for employees and visitors alike.
