THE CHALLENGE

Easily recognizable as the tallest building in Mountain View, 444 Castro needed to address water intrusion issues, accessibility compliance and establish a new, updated building identity. The challenge was to create a stronger street presence for multiple retail entries, provide new building amenities and upgrade the tenant suites for leasing. The team was challenged with abatement issues, outdated MEP equipment, extreme water issues, limited structural capacity, lack of building wayfinding and signage, parking limitations; and ensuring the new design was cohesively respectful to the original 70’s architectural vocabulary.

THE SOLUTION

This project provided the owner, The Swig Company, the opportunity to reposition the building as a modernized entity within the heart of the downtown urban fabric. The design team updated the plaza level suites to open plenum warm shell spaces ready for new restaurant, retail or commercial tenants. The owner also added new amenity spaces to the common areas including an updated lobby, conferencing center, fitness and locker rooms, and a newly landscaped courtyard with a shaded bar and fire-pit lounge and EV parking stations. MEP upgrades, stair, elevator and restroom upgrades provide for more useable and leasable suites. Look for this new destination to work and play in downtown Mountain View.
